TATTOO DEPOSITS AND APPOINTMENTS: HOW BOOKING WORKS

A tattoo deposit holds your spot on the schedule and covers the time an artist spends drawing your design before you ever sit in the chair, so it is non-refundable. If you no show or cancel late, that time is gone and cannot be resold to someone else. Walk-ins are always welcome at our Madison area shop for smaller pieces, and no deposit is needed for those. Custom work and bigger pieces usually go through a scheduled appointment with a deposit to lock in the date. Understanding this upfront saves confusion later, since the two paths, walk-in and appointment, work differently from the moment you first reach out.

WHY DEPOSITS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE

When you book ahead, your artist sets aside part of their day just for you. For custom pieces, that includes hours spent off the clock sketching your design, sourcing reference images, and making sure the composition sits right on your body before you arrive. A deposit is not a down payment on the finished tattoo. It is payment for that reserved time and drawing work. Once a slot is set aside, it cannot be filled by anyone else, even if you cancel or do not show up. That is the reason the deposit stays with the shop no matter what happens after.

This is standard practice across tattooing, not something specific to us. It protects the artist's time and keeps the schedule fair for clients who are ready to commit to their appointment. It also means the artists at our shop can spend real time getting your design right instead of rushing it, because that time is already accounted for.

WALK-IN OR APPOINTMENT: WHICH DO YOU NEED?

Walk-ins are a good fit for smaller, simpler pieces that do not need much design time up front. You come in during open hours, talk with whichever artist is available, and if the timing lines up, you can get tattooed the same visit. No deposit and no advance planning required. This works well for flash pieces, small script, or simple designs you already have a clear picture of.

Appointments make more sense for custom work, larger pieces, anything that needs real design time, or if you want a specific artist on a specific day. Booking ahead means your design gets drawn up before you arrive instead of on the spot. If you are set on a particular style, like fine line, illustrative work, or detailed black and grey, booking ahead also gives that artist time to plan the composition properly. Our walk-in tattoos guide breaks down how that side of booking works if you are not sure which route fits your idea.

HOW TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT

There are three ways to reach us: call the shop at (608) 520-0603, stop in at 2229 Parmenter St in Middleton during open hours, or send a DM to @traditionalinktat2 on Instagram. However you reach out, come with an idea of what you want, roughly where on your body it goes, and a rough sense of size. That is enough for us to start talking design and scheduling.

We are open Tuesday through Thursday from 12 PM to 6 PM, Friday and Saturday from 12 PM to 8 PM, and Sunday from 12 PM to 5 PM. We are closed Monday. Stopping in during those hours is the fastest way to get a feel for the shop and see what each artist has going on, and it also gives you a chance to look through flash and past work in person before you commit to a date.

CONSULTATIONS FOR CUSTOM WORK

If you are planning a custom piece, a cover-up, or anything with a lot of detail, a consultation before your appointment helps everyone get on the same page. This is where you talk through placement, size, style, and references with your artist so the design actually matches what you want. Consultations matter most for larger illustrative work, American Traditional pieces with specific imagery, or detailed black and grey pieces with heavy shading. Bring photos, sketches, or anything else that shows the style or feeling you are after, and be ready to talk openly about what you do and do not like so the design can be adjusted before it is finalized.

Once the design direction is settled, that is usually when a deposit is collected to hold your date and cover the drawing time that goes into finishing the design.

RESCHEDULING AN APPOINTMENT

Plans change, and we understand that. If something comes up, reach out as soon as you know instead of waiting until the day of your appointment. Giving your artist notice makes it possible to offer that slot to someone else and keeps the schedule fair for everyone booked around you. Repeated last minute cancellations or no shows make it harder for a shop to keep holding appointment slots for you going forward, since every open slot represents time an artist could have used for someone else.

The deposit itself does not carry forward indefinitely or get refunded, so treating your appointment time with the same respect you would want in return goes a long way. If your schedule is genuinely uncertain, it is worth waiting to book until you have a date that will actually work rather than booking now and rescheduling later. A quick call or Instagram message is usually all it takes to sort out a new date once you know your plans.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR FIRST TIMERS

If this is your first tattoo, deciding between a walk-in and an appointment can feel like the hardest part before you even get to the design itself. Our tattoo cost guide breaks down how pricing works once you are ready to talk numbers, and stopping by during open hours is always a good first step if you would rather talk it through in person before committing to a booking. Either way, walking in with a clear idea of what you want makes the whole process faster for everyone.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DO I NEED A DEPOSIT FOR A WALK-IN TATTOO?

No. Walk-ins for smaller pieces do not require a deposit. You come in during open hours, talk with an available artist, and if the timing works out you can get tattooed that same visit. Deposits only come into play once you schedule an appointment ahead of time, which is more common for custom or larger pieces that need design work first.

WHY IS MY TATTOO DEPOSIT NON-REFUNDABLE?

A deposit pays for the time your artist blocks out for you and, for custom work, the hours spent drawing your design before your appointment. That time and work cannot be recovered if you cancel or do not show, so the deposit stays with the shop. It is standard across tattooing and protects the time artists set aside for scheduled clients.

WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT?

Call (608) 520-0603, stop in at the shop in Middleton during open hours, or send a DM to @traditionalinktat2 on Instagram. Come with a general idea of your design, placement, and size so we can start the conversation. From there we can talk through whether your piece works better as a walk-in or a scheduled appointment with a consultation.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO A CUSTOM TATTOO CONSULTATION?

Bring reference photos, sketches, or anything else that shows the style, imagery, or feeling you want, along with a clear idea of placement and rough size. The more direction you give your artist, the closer the first design draft lands to what you actually picture. A consultation is also the right time to ask questions before a deposit is collected.
