The right tattoo artist is the one whose healed work matches the style you want, who runs a clean shop, and who takes time to get your idea right before the needle ever touches skin. Reviews and portfolio quality matter more than convenience or price. At Traditional Ink in Middleton, WI, we tell people the same thing every time: pick the artist first, and the right shop follows.
Here's a practical way to evaluate any tattoo artist before you book, including what to look for and what to ask.
Fresh tattoos look great in photos. Swelling smooths out fine lines, saturated ink looks richer than it will in a month, and a bad shading job can hide under redness. Healed photos tell the real story. Ask any artist you're considering to show you work that's a few months old or older, ideally in the same style you're planning.
Look for consistency across the whole portfolio, not just one or two standout pieces. Clean line work, even saturation, and sharp detail that held up after healing are the signs of an artist who knows what they're doing.
It's also worth paying attention to how varied the healed work is within a single style. An artist with dozens of healed traditional pieces, in different sizes and placements, has proven their approach holds up across real skin and real years, not just under studio lighting on day one.
Not every artist excels at every style, and a good shop makes that easy to sort out. At Traditional Ink, each of our four artists has a distinct specialty:
If you want a bold rose with heavy color saturation, that's a different skill set than a delicate fine line botanical piece or a detailed illustrative dragon. Match your idea to the artist whose portfolio proves they excel in that exact lane.
It also helps to think about how your tattoo will age when you're matching styles. Bold American Traditional work, with its thick lines and rich color, tends to hold up well over years. Fine line and delicate script can look stunning fresh, and an artist who works in that style regularly will know how to set your expectations honestly about long-term upkeep.
A reputable shop is spotless, uses single-use needles, and has artists wearing gloves at all times. Equipment should be visibly sterilized and stations should be wiped down between clients. If a shop feels cluttered or rushed, that's a red flag worth trusting.
If you can, visit in person before booking. A quick walk-through tells you a lot: are stations set up fresh for each client, does the space feel organized, are artists focused on their work rather than distracted. You'll also get a feel for whether the shop's overall vibe matches what you're looking for.
Google reviews are one of the most honest signals available. Traditional Ink has 111 Google reviews at a 5.0 rating, and that consistency across dozens of different clients and styles says more than any single portfolio photo can. Look for patterns in the reviews: comments about cleanliness, communication, and how the tattoo healed over time.
Once you've narrowed it down, a short consultation clears up the rest. Good questions to ask include:
A confident artist answers directly and doesn't pressure you into a design or a decision on the spot. If something feels off during the consultation, trust that instinct. The right fit should feel collaborative, not rushed, with your artist genuinely interested in getting the design, size, and placement right before anything is committed to skin.
At Traditional Ink, walk-ins are always welcome during our open hours: Tuesday through Thursday 12PM to 6PM, and Friday through Saturday 12PM to 8PM. Walk-ins work well for smaller, simpler pieces. For larger custom work, booking ahead gives your artist time to draw the design properly and dedicate a full session to it.
Our rate is $150 per hour across all artists and styles. A non-refundable deposit holds a scheduled appointment and is applied to your total. Walk-ins pay at the end with no deposit required. If you're happy with the result, a tip of 15 to 25 percent is customary.
Every artist at Traditional Ink is happy to talk through your idea before you commit to anything. If you're weighing your options in the Madison area, our Madison WI tattoo shop guide covers what else to look for locally, and walk-ins are welcome anytime we're open.
Choosing an artist is worth the extra time up front. A tattoo is permanent, and the difference between an artist who's the right match for your style and one who isn't shows up for years, not just on the day you walk out of the shop. Take your time, look at healed work, and pick the person whose portfolio genuinely matches what you have in mind.
HOW DO I KNOW IF A TATTOO ARTIST IS GOOD?
Look at their healed work, not just fresh photos. Fresh tattoos can hide flaws that show up once the swelling and ink saturation settle. A good artist is happy to show you healed photos in the style you want, and their portfolio should show consistency, not just one or two strong pieces.
WHAT QUESTIONS SHOULD I ASK AT A TATTOO CONSULTATION?
Ask how much experience the artist has in the style you want, whether you can see healed examples, what the deposit policy is, and roughly how long the piece will take. A good artist answers directly and won't rush you into a decision.
